A 20th Century silver plated oval platter with a domed lid, surmounted by an elaborate gilded sculptural group. The surface of the cloche has a soft, lightly textured patina, contrasting with the richly burnished gold-toned decoration above. A classic design from the Lapini atelier in Florence.
The finial is formed as a dynamic arrangement of sea life: multiple fish intertwined and layered amongst shells and aquatic forms. Each fish is finely detailed, with individually chased scales, defined fins, and expressive eyes. The composition stretches almost the full length of the lid, creating a dramatic horizontal emphasis and a strong sense of movement, as though the fish are caught mid-swirl across the surface. The contrast between the cool silver plate and the warm gilded sculpture heightens the theatrical effect making a bold and playful centrepiece for the dining table. Marked on the underneath, "Franco Lapini, Italy".
