ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Monteith bowls, with their distinctive notched brims, were designed to cradle wine glasses in ice water, preventing them from rolling or clashing. Named after a Scottish gentleman, Monsieur Monteigh, whose cloak featured a "u"-shaped pattern similar to the notches, these bowls gained popularity in 18th-century England for cooling glasses of wine or punch, complementing heavily spiced meals. Earlier bowls without notches served similar purposes, as depicted in Jakob Bogdani’s still-life art. Later, detachable rims made Monteiths versatile for use as punch bowls, fruit holders, or decorative pieces. Today, they inspire creative repurposing, offering charm and sophistication in modern settings.
