DESCRIPTION
Antique 19th Century William IV Solid Silver Soup Tureen and Cover, magnificent size and weight, oval form on four cast acanthus leaf-clad feet, cast scrolling handles, large applied border, the domed cover with conforming decoration. Both body and cover are engraved with arms, motto "IN VIA FREMIT" and initials "J.F".
Each part is Hallmarked English Silver (925 Standard), London, year 1836 (A), Maker's mark B.S (Benjamin Smith). Both parts are further stamped "B.SMITH DUKE ST LINn INN FIELDS". Benjamin Smith III apprenticed under his father Benjamin Smith II, important silversmith working in the same period and at the same level of Paul Storr, producing various monumental pieces now held in major museums and collections.
