ANTIQUE 19thC SCOTTISH SILVER MOUNTED HORN TABLE SNUFF MULL & JARS c.1850

Antique 19th Century Scottish silver mounted cow horn table snuff mull with four cut glass jars and chained impliments. Particularly impressive and very rare to find a complete cased set, this presentation snuff mull is formed from a naturally coiled cow horn of a pale colour graduating to a dark tip, extensively mounted with engraved and pierced silver fittings. The broad end of the horn is fitted with a silver mounted hinged cover, decorated with a thistle and bearing the historic Scottish motto “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit” - “No one provokes me with impunity.”. The rim also bearing similar thistle detailing. Applied to the front of the horn is a large engraved presentation plaque reading: “Lawnmarket Club Instituted A.D. 1836 This Horn Was Presented to the Club by Thomas Sawers Junr. Esq. Lord Provost June 1851.”. Beneath is a further shaped silver plaque engraved for Thomas Sawers Junr., Esq., Lord Provost, and recording the years 1849, 1850, 1851 and 1852. Thomas sawers served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh, making the piece an evocative survival of Edinburgh civic and club life during the middle years of the 19th Century. Suspended from the horn by silver chains are four original implements, comprising the various tools associated with the preparation and serving of snuff. These remain together with the mull and are accommodated within their own fitted section of the case. The set is accompanied by four matching cut-glass jars, each of cylindrical form with deeply cut and scalloped decoration and fitted with a circular metal lid bearing an applied cipher. Of particular note is the survival of the original fitted wooden presentation box, the interior lined in deep red velvet and shaped precisely to receive the coiled horn, its chained implements and the four jars positioned at the corners. The piece is not hallmarked, as often with snuff mulls.
