ANTIQUE 19thC VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER & GLASS CLARET JUG, SHEFFIELD c.1889
Antique 19th Century Victorian solid silver and glass claret jug of tapering, rounded form, with cut glass decoration to the base. The jug is fitted with a silver-mounted band and neck, and a wooden handle. The hinged lid has a thumb piece and is engraved with a crest and the motto “COMMIT THY WORK TO GOD.” The inscription is taken from the Bible, specifically Proverbs 16:3 in the King James Version. The phrase reflects the idea that one should place their efforts and plans in God’s hands, with success and guidance coming through faith and righteous action. It is also found in heraldry, where it has been used by a number of families of Scottish and English origin. Both decorative and practical, it is well suited for serving wine or water.
