ANTIQUE 19thC BURMESE SOLID SILVER REPOUSSÉ "JATAKA TALES" MUG c.1890

Antique late 19th Century Burmese solid silver "Jataka Tales" mug, crisp and highly decorative, chased and repoussé with various figures from Burmese mythology, cast naga shaped handle, with a gilt interior. This mug depicts scenes from the Jataka Tales, a collection of literature concerning the previous lives of Gautama Buddha in both human and animal form. These stories illustrated the various acts and spiritual practices which are required on the path to Buddahood, teaching morality, particularly within the framework of karma and rebirth.

The mug is unmarked as is often the case, acid tested shows a high 900+ standard silver purity, judging by the quality and style the mug dates to the 1880's.
