ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hung Chong & Co was one of the leading Chinese silversmith workshops and retailers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, renowned for producing finely crafted Chinese export silver in Shanghai. The firm is generally dated to around 1830–1925, although its retail premises at 11B Nanking Road were established in 1892 by Fok Ying Chew, following an earlier manufacturing operation. In 1906, the business was sold to Sum Luen-sing, under whose ownership it continued to flourish, employing a substantial number of craftsmen and assistants.
Hung Chong & Co became particularly noted for its elaborate repoussé silverware, incorporating traditional Chinese motifs such as dragons, chrysanthemums, birds and flowering plants, as well as finely decorated tea services, boxes, caskets and presentation pieces. The firm also traded in luxury goods including blackwood furniture, embroidery and silk, reflecting the cosmopolitan character of Shanghai during this period. Its silver was produced for both Chinese and Western customers and is now regarded as an important part of the history of Chinese export silver, with examples held in museums and private collections around the world.
