ANTIQUE 19thC CHINESE GILT SOLID SILVER MOUNTED NAUTILUS SHELL CENTREPIECE

Antique 19th Century Chinese gilt solid silver nautilus shell centrepiece, mounted with a boldly modelled dragon in high relief. The natural shell is set horizontally within a shaped gilt silver rim, its iridescent surface providing a dramatic ground for the finely chased dragon that coils dynamically across it. The detailing is crisp and sculptural, from the individually worked scales and flowing whiskers to the powerful claws and expressive head, creating strong depth and movement.

The shell is raised on an elaborate stem formed as a twisting sea creature emerging from stylised waves, above a circular foot richly cast and chased with scrolling floral ornament. Likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, the piece reflects the highly decorative taste of the period and was conceived as a luxurious display object, combining natural form with accomplished silversmithing and gilded finish.
