ANTIQUE 20thC AUSTRIAN SILVERED BRONZE STATUE ON MARBLE OF FRANZ JOSEPH I c.1900

£1,295.00

Antique 20th Century Austrian silvered bronze equestrian sculpture, depicting Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830–1916), mounted on a green veined marble plinth. The Emperor is portrayed in full military dress, wearing his distinctive high crowned officer's cap, a double breasted tunic adorned with military decorations and medals, and tall riding boots. His characteristic swept moustache is particularly well modelled. Seated upright upon his horse, the Emperor holds the reins in a composed pose with his ceremonial sword suspended at his side. The horse is beautifully sculptured, displaying finely rendered musculature, carefully detailed and a naturalistic stance. The large, rectangular green marble base provides a striking contrast to the sculpture.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830–1916) was one of Europe's longest reigning monarchs, ruling the Austrian Empire from 1848 and the Austro-Hungarian Empire from its formation in 1867 until his death in 1916. A prominent figure in 19th Century European history, he became a symbol of Habsburg imperial authority, military tradition and the grandeur of the Austro Hungarian monarchy. His remarkable 68 year reign witnessed profound political, social and industrial changes, as well as considerable upheaval across Europe. The assassination of his nephew and heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo in 1914 precipitated the crisis that led to the First World War. Franz Joseph remains one of the most recognisable figures of the Habsburg dynasty, frequently commemorated in portraits, medals and equestrian sculptures depicting him in his distinctive military uniform.
