ANTIQUE 20thC AUSTRIAN TERACOTTA FRIEDRICH GOLDSCHEIDER FIGURE IN A CHAIR c.1900
Antique 20th Century Austrian terracotta figurine finished in a bronze coloured patina, depicting a seated figure in a period appropriate bamboo chair. The piece is believed to be the work of either B. Haniroff or Cherc, both of whom designed for the Austrian manufacturer Goldscheider around the turn of the 20th century, consistent with the period in which this figure was produced. As expected, the underside bears the makerβs mark, together with the impressed numbers 1225, 166 and 25.
Friedrich Goldscheider was a prominent Austrian-Bohemian entrepreneur and founder of the Goldscheider porcelain and terracotta manufactory, established in Vienna in 1885. The company became renowned internationally for its finely modelled and often highly decorative terracotta, porcelain and earthenware figures, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Goldscheider worked with a distinguished group of sculptors and designers, producing fashionable figures that reflected the artistic movements and tastes of the period. His manufactory became one of the leading producers of art pottery in Europe, with works exported widely and exhibited internationally. Today, Goldscheider pieces are highly regarded by collectors for their quality, variety of subject matter and distinctive combination of sculpture and decorative design.
