Antique 19th Century Japanese cast iron Ryubundoa carved tetsubin kettle. The cylindrical iron body is decorated in low relief with a continuous design of bundled rice sheaves, among which two batta (grasshoppers) are depicted crawling. The lobed handle is inlaid in flat relief with silver grapes and vine.

The cover has a mottled red and brown patina and is surmounted by a pierced flower-form finial. The underside of the cover bears a chiselled signature reading Ryubundo tsukuru.
