Antique 19th Century Japanese Meiji period gilt bronze figure of a labourer by the Miyao Eisuke Company of Yokohama. The muscular figure stands with feet apart, wearing a fundoshi (loincloth) and a vest decorated with flowers and whorl patterns, carrying a rice bale over his left shoulder.

The figure is affixed to a typical Miyao-style wooden stand lacquered in gold takamaki-e with a stylised butterfly amid karakusa (β€˜Chinese grasses’). The reverse is signed Miyao within a gold rectangular reserve.
