Antique 19th Century Japanese Meiji period pair of bronze vessels in the form of karako (Chinese boys). Each figure is cast standing and leaning forward with their hands resting on an elaborately tasselled kusudama (brocade hand ball). The top of each ball is removable, forming the cover.

The balls are carved in high relief with a repeating design of hanabishi-mon (flowery diamond crests) among foliage. The robes of the boys are decorated respectively with floral and foliate motifs and with waterwheel designs. Unsigned.
