ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Rijksmuseum records that Johannes Mattheus van Kempen III (1814–1877) founded his silver factory in Utrecht in 1835. Van Kempen pioneered mechanised silver production in the Netherlands, including the use of steam power, and the rapidly expanding concern moved to Voorschoten in 1858, where it became the largest silver factory in the country. The firm developed a significant international reputation through participation in world's fairs and was particularly associated with carefully researched historicising styles.
