ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Louis XVI (1754–1793) was the last king of France before the French Revolution, reigning from 1774 until 1792. He inherited a kingdom burdened by financial crises and social inequalities, and his indecisive leadership struggled to address these mounting pressures. Despite attempts at reform, including efforts to modernise taxation and support economic improvements, he faced opposition from both the nobility and the Parlement. His marriage to Marie Antoinette drew further criticism, symbolising the perceived extravagance of the monarchy. Ultimately, Louis XVI’s inability to navigate the revolutionary tide led to his arrest, trial, and execution by guillotine in 1793, marking a dramatic end to centuries of absolute monarchy in France.
