ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Syrian mother-of-pearl and bone inlaid furniture reflects a long tradition of decorative craftsmanship rooted in Damascus and other historic centres of woodworking. These materials were chosen both for their visual contrast and their symbolic value: the iridescence of mother-of-pearl catching the light, set against the pale tone of bone. The geometric and floral patterns draw on Islamic design principles, avoiding figurative imagery and emphasising balance, repetition, and precision. Inlay also served a practical purpose, strengthening surfaces while masking joins, but above all it allowed makers to demonstrate technical skill and patience, as each element was cut and fitted by hand. Such furniture was traditionally made for affluent households and export markets, where its intricate decoration signalled refinement, status, and a connection to established craft traditions.
