VINTAGE 20thC ENGLISH TEAK SIDEBOARD BY ELLIOTS OF NEWBURY c.1960
A handsome mid-century teak sideboard by Elliots of Newbury (EON), one of Britain's most respected post-war furniture manufacturers. Dating to the 1960s, the piece combines clean architectural lines with practical storage, exemplifying the quality craftsmanship and understated elegance for which the company became renowned.
Constructed in richly figured teak, the sideboard features two banks of three graduated drawers flanking a central double-door cupboard. The drawer fronts display attractive horizontal detailing, while the integrated recessed handles maintain the clean, uncluttered aesthetic characteristic of mid-century modern design. Raised on elegant tapering legs with shaped stretchers, the cabinet possesses a lightness and sophistication often associated with the best British furniture of the period.
The central cupboard opens to reveal useful storage space, while one of the drawers retains its original grey baize lining and fitted cutlery dividers, highlighting the piece's intended use as a dining room sideboard. The generous proportions and well-considered layout make it a highly practical storage piece for contemporary living.
Founded in 1870, Elliots of Newbury became one of Britain's leading furniture makers during the mid-20th century, producing high-quality modern designs that successfully combined traditional cabinet-making techniques with contemporary styling. Today, EON furniture is increasingly sought after by collectors of British mid-century design for its quality, durability, and timeless appeal.
