DESCRIPTION

Antique mid-19th Century Exceptional & Impressively large German (Hanau) solid silver lidded tankard, in the style of the early 16th Century examples, the front beautifully chased and embossed with a very detailed crowded battle scenes, reverse chased with views of a castle in landscape, adorned with grotesque masks flanked by satyrs and birds.

The tankard and base decorated through-out with elaborate scrolling foliage in relief, base applied with lizards, applied with a large decorative handle terminating with a scrolls and mask leaf junction, hinged domed cover in the same style applied with a figural thumb-piece and lid mounted with a bear holding a shield with crest. Hallmarked with a French mark ET, mark used on old foreign silver (tested 800+ grade silver), Maker's mark not visible.
