ANTIQUE 18thC GERMAN 18k GOLD & ENAMEL SNUFF BOX, LES FRERES TOUSSAINT c.1780
Antique 18th Century Exceptional German 18k gold & enamel snuff box, rectangular shaped with rounded corners, featuring an intricately designed lid. The centerpiece is a semi-circular enamel plaque depicting a picturesque harbor scene: to the left, a merchant sailboat is anchored, while to the right, a young couple is shown fishing in front of a hilly landscape with cascading waterfalls and a charming watermill. The sky above is rendered in translucent pink enamel, subtly revealing the radiating engine-turned pattern beneath. This scene is framed by an opaque enamel border, enhancing its visual appeal.
The surrounding surface is adorned with reeded engine-turned patterns, interspersed with bands of blue enamel encircling oval motifs. The sides and base of the box are similarly decorated with meticulous attention to detail. The box bears a sunburst and sprigs mark for Les Freres Toussaint, Hanau, with the right rim numbered 3961, French Gold guarantee mark (eagle head).
