ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Gustav Wancke was a Swedish-born goldsmith working in Berlin from 1800, becoming a foreman in 1802. He married Johanne Louise Burghardt that same year, and one of his apprentices was Carl Wilhelm Heinrich Weylandt, who had previously trained under Jean François Fregevize.

Wancke and Fregevize shared a professional connection, occasionally employing the same enamel painter to decorate their boxes. Wancke's work also demonstrates the use of bright-cut engraving on a matt ground, a decorative technique used by other Berlin workshops, including the Frères Jordan and the Thérémin brothers, who later brought the technique to St Petersburg.
