19th Century Indian silver gilt and engraved gold foiled-blue enamel snuff box, the hinged cover and the sides are beautifully decorated with hunting scenes depicting animals and figures in the jungle.

The box features an exceptionally fine and rare technique called "Thewa-work", typical of the ancient town of Pratabgarth, Rajasthan.

Acid tested (900+ standard), applied with a high-purity gold foil.

DESCRIPTION

Antique 19th Century extremely rare Indian solid silver gilt and engraved gold foiled-blue enamel snuff box, the hinged cover and the sides are beautifully decorated with hunting scenes depicting animals and figures in the jungle.

The box features an exceptionally fine and rare technique called "Thewa-work", typical of the ancient town of Pratabgarth, Rajasthan. The box has been acid tested (it shows a 900+ silver standard), applied with a high-purity gold foil. This type of objects were popular luxury items made for visiting Europeans in the 19th century and have known a recent revival. The fine quality on this particular piece suggests a date between 1860 and 1900. The piece is comparable to some examples in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

CONDITION

In Great Condition - Just minor wear and a small loss to the gold foil on the lid's upper right corner.
