Description
Antique 20th Century Indian Solid Silver pair of massive Jugs / Ewers, extremely heavy gauge, each piece is decorated all over with typically Cutch (Kutch, Guarat region) chasing work, distinguished by a closely worked, foliate and floral repoussé design. Each body is also embossed with eight oval panels depicting deities in relief and is applied with a cast figural handle modelled like an elephant's head, the hinged lids are also mounted with cast finials, one modelled like a bear with a stick, the other as an elephant. Bothe neck are engraved with initials "M.P" and the names "Weiss" and "Roth".
This extraordinarily made pair of ewers features an excellent workmanship and a very unusual style, mixing elements from the Cutch and Swami (popular in Madras and Bangalore) visual culture. As often the case the piece is unmarked (acid tested show a 900+ silver standard), but is clearly the product of a prominent Indian Colonial silversmith. It probably dates to the 1910's.
