DESCRIPTION
Antique early-20th Century Monumental Indian colonial solid silver presentation cup & cover. Of traditional form, standing on a wide spreading domed foot. Without the hallmark of ‘Bombay’ on this cups base, considering the high relief of repoussé work and large hunting scenes and the distinctive design of the trees, one would assume that this silver is from Lucknow. It would explain it as silversmiths from other regions such as Lucknow, migrated to this cosmopolitan business center of India (Bombay), and brought with them styles and techniques from their regions.
The cup finial depicts a nobleman on horseback hunting a wild boar with a spear. The side with a vacant shield cartouche and is flanked on both sides by British royal horse (unicorn) and a lion. The plain stem of the cup is heavily decorated with acanthus leaves and grape wines. Some Bombay silver objects were marked as ‘T.100 to T.85, indicating the purity of the silver. This cup is marked T.90 (900+ standard), Makers mark NOOM (unknown).
