ANTIQUE 19thC INDIAN KUTCH SOLID SILVER THREE PIECE TEA SET c.1890
Antique 19th Century Indian Kutch solid silver three-piece tea set, comprising a teapot, sugar pot and milk jug. Each piece is densly chased in the traditional Kutch style, with repoussé foliage and flowers on a tooled, matted ground, interspersed with animals. A plain central girdle divides the decoration: birds above and hunting animals below. The teapot is topped with a cast scorpion with raised tail. The sugar pot is applied with two lizard handles, while the milk jug features a lizard handle and a cow’s head forming the spout. The piece features the most astonishing craftsmanship that can be found on Indian silver.
The quality of the repoussé work suggests that the silversmith trained his technique and taste in the Kutch Bhuj region, with a quality only comparable to the finest pieces by Oomersi Mawji. Note: A very similar set by Oomersi Mawji appears on page 68 of Silver Dunes of Kutch, The Anat Jhaveri Collective.
