ANTIQUE 19thC INDIAN SAURASHTRA (SOUTHERN GUJARAT) MONUMENTAL SIZE GOBLET c.1890

£3,495.00

Antique late 19th Century Indian solid silver goblet, originating from the Saurashtra region of Southern Gujarat, decorated throughout with exceptionally detailed animal and hunting scenes. The deep, slightly tapering bowl is worked in high relief with a continuous panorama of animals and birds, including lions, deer and antelope, arranged within densely chased and matted grounds. The naturalistic decoration is characteristic of silverwork associated with western India. The front of the goblet features a polished shield shaped vacant cartouche. The goblet is raised on an equally elaborate stem, incorporating a bulbous central knop decorated with animals. The broad circular foot is profusely worked with additional continuous animal scenes and finished with a finely patterned outer border. A great example of Anglo Indian / Indian colonial period silver, combining impressive scale, workmanship and the distinctive animal decoration for which Saurashtra silver is particularly admired.

As expected not hallmarked but has been acid tested and shows a 900+ silver purity, made in Gujarat, dating to around 1890.
