DESCRIPTION
Antique mid-19th century garnet and diamond ring, set with a large heart-shaped foil backed garnet, framed with circular-cut diamonds, surmounted by a similar diamond-set bow.
The ring is typically mid-19th century, probably French, the yellow gold apparently unmarked shows a 18 carat purity.
The ring has a very important provenance: it belonged to Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, god daughter of King George V (please follow this link).
Heart-shaped garnets were very popular in the 19th century; a similarly made diamond-framed garnet bracelet was recently sold in Sotheby's, please follow this link.
