ANTIQUE 19thC THAI SOLID SILVER & ENAMEL COVERED BOWL & STAND c.1880
Antique 19th Century Thai solid silver & enamel covered bowl on stand. Made in a traditional form, decorated throughout with scrolling foliage, flowers and Phaya Naga creatures on an array of dark blue, red, green and yellow enamelled ground. The stand features an identical enamelling design, it comprises of a flared base, a decorative ring and then a bowl-shape concave area where the covered bowl fits in place.
Enamelling technique do not originate in Thailand, the process was originally developed by the Chinese and was most likely introduced to Thailand by the Chinese silversmiths arriving in the 18th and 19th Century. The most common colours used in Thai pieces are greens and blues. (Thai silver & nielloware, Paul Bromberg, page 28-29).
