20thC LOUIS VUITTON WARDROBE TRUNK IN MONOGRAM CANVAS, FRANCE c.1930
An exceptional Louis Vuitton double hanging wardrobe trunk dating to circa 1930, crafted in the iconic Monogram canvas with natural leather trim and solid brass hardware. Designed for extended travel, this model represents the height of interwar luxury luggage, when ocean liners and grand railway journeys demanded both elegance and practicality.
The trunk opens in two vertical halves, each fitted with a full-length hanging compartment. This “double hanging” configuration allowed garments to be transported on both sides, maximising capacity while keeping clothing neatly suspended and crease-free. The original wooden hangers remain in place, suspended from metal rails, and the interior is lined in the characteristic Vuitton ochre canvas. Internal leather label plates list Louis Vuitton’s prestigious addresses, including Paris (Champs-Élysées and Nice) and London (New Bond Street), confirming its early 20th-century origin.
The exterior retains its reinforced leather corners, riveted brass trim, and central locking system. The robust vertical construction and reinforced edging reflect the wardrobe trunk’s purpose: to function almost as a portable closet during long voyages.
Wardrobe trunks from this period are among the most sought-after Louis Vuitton pieces, and the double hanging configuration is particularly desirable for its symmetry and generous storage.
