20thC FRAMED BEKEN OF COWES PRINT OF THE RACING YACHT 'VELSHEDA' c.1934
A 20th Century framed photographic print from the Beken Marine Photography Archive titled Velsheda, 1934.
Built for businessman W. L. Stephenson, owner of the Woolworths chain, the yacht’s name combines those of his three daughters: Velma, Sheila, and Daphne. Between 1933 and 1936 she raced against celebrated contemporaries including Britannia, Endeavour, and Shamrock V, winning over forty races in her second season alone. Laid up from 1937, she was later acquired and extensively rebuilt in the late 1990s, including the installation of what was then the tallest carbon rig in the world. Since her relaunch in 1997, she has remained active in both racing and cruising.
