ANTIQUE 19thC VICTORIAN MINIATURE OIL PAINTING DEPICTING AN ENTOMOLOGIST c.1850
A charming and unusual Victorian miniature oil painting on metal, probably tinplate or sheet iron, depicting an elderly entomologist examining a butterfly, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The finely detailed composition portrays a cheerful elderly gentleman seated in his study, wearing a bright red coat over a patterned blue waistcoat. Holding a butterfly delicately in one hand, he examines the specimen through a magnifying glass, his animated expression lending the scene a distinctly humorous character. The surrounding interior is filled with fascinating details relating to the study of natural history, including an open illustrated entomological book, a specimen jar containing an insect and a wooden cabinet with open drawers displaying carefully arranged collections of butterflies and beetles. The meticulous rendering of these objects contrasts beautifully with the slightly caricatural treatment of the gentleman. The painting reflects the extraordinary enthusiasm for natural history and amateur entomology in Victorian Britain, when collecting, identifying and classifying insects became fashionable pursuits among both professional naturalists and enthusiastic amateurs. The subject combines scientific curiosity with the gentle humour characteristic of Victorian genre painting. Executed on a small metal panel, the painting is housed within a substantial, deeply moulded dark wooden frame with a gilt inner border, creating an attractive contrast with the miniature scale and intricate detail of the composition.
