PAIR OF ANTIQUE 18thC ENGLISH HAND PAINTED KING GEORGE II & KING GEORGE IV HERALDIC SHIELDS
Antique 18th Century English hand painted heraldic plaques, each formed as a shaped oak shield and decorated with royal coats of arms associated with King George II and King George IV. The plaques display richly coloured quartered armorial designs in red, black and gold tones, incorporating the lions of England, the lion rampant of Scotland, the harp of Ireland and the fleurs-de-lis of France, together with the Hanoverian escutcheon at the centre.
Each shield is surmounted by a painted royal crown beneath a curved banner bearing the monarch’s name in Gothic script, one reading “George II” and the other “George IV”. The surfaces show visible age and wear, with craquelure, rubbing and fading to the paint adding to their period character. The warm oak ground contrasts well against the bold heraldic decoration, giving the pair a strong decorative presence well suited to a traditional interior or collection of royal memorabilia.
